Nick Diaz’s camp offers scathing response to B.J. Penn’s angry Twitter rant

B.J. Penn fired an opening salvo on Thursday to reignite a rivalry with Nick Diaz following his loss in their fight at UFC 137 last October. Penn initially retired, then said he’d return when he was ready, and on Thursday unleashed a short tirade against Diaz.

As a refresher, here’s what Penn posted on Twitter, referencing a picture of the two of them backstage after the fight:

“Look how much bigger you are in this pic… I thought you were gonna scrap from the beginning homie? What was that coward fence holding strategy to tire out the smaller man? Street fighter my ass! I made you fight like glass jaw [Jon Fitch] poser! I’ll be ready for that weak [bulls***] next time we fight!”

On Friday, Diaz’s camp fired back at Penn, in a post titled “Say it Ain’t So, B.J.” at GracieFighter.com:

“B.J. Penn has apparently not come to terms with the beating he received at the hands of Nick Diaz… At some point it is up to those around you to protect you from yourself. To take you aside and let you know you are wrong and help save you from your folly. Unfortunately for Penn he is surrounded by ‘Yes Men’ that are unwilling to do that. The outcome will be predictable, resulting in a fighter that will never push himself to the fullest and will always have excuses for his losses.”

Penick’s Analysis: Penn’s Tweet on Thursday was out of character, but this scathing and spot on response from the Gracie camp is very much them. The main criticism of Penn throughout his career has been that he has coasted by on talent and never truly pushed himself to be his best, and he’s gotten a reputation for making excuses as well. Who knows what this will lead to, as Diaz is in a bout with Carlos Condit next month and the UFC won’t make that rematch for the title if he wins, but it’s certainly setting up for something right now.
